Exchange of Notes (July 6 and 8, 1933) concerning Commercial Relations between Canada and Austria [1933] CATSer 1 (10 July 1933)

E102952 - CTS 1933 No.10

EXCHANGE OF NOTES CONCERNING COMMERCIAL RELATIONS BETWEEN CANADA AND AUSTRIA

I

The Secretary of State for External Affairs of Canada to the Austrian Minister at London

London, July 6, 1933

His Excellency the Austrian Minister,
18, Belgrave Square,
London, S.W. 1.

My Dear Minister,

I have the honour to inform you that I have just been advised that an Order in Council* was passed by the Government of Canada which grants the Intermediate Tariff, subject to the usual direct shipment provision, to Austrian goods from the 10th July to the 31st December, 1933.

My understanding is that your Republic will grant to Canadian goods the benefits of your most-favoured-nation tariff.

I thank you for your courtesy in bringing this matter to my attention in the way you did, and I trust that the interchange of commodities between our two countries may greatly increase with equal benefits to both.

Believe me, My Dear Minister, I am, Yours very sincerely,

R. B. Bennett

II

The Austrian Minister at London to the Secretary of State for External Affairs of Canada

AUSTRIAN LEGATION

18 Belgrave Square, S.W. 1,
London, 8th July, 1933

The Right Honourable R. B. Bennett, P.C., M.P.,
London.

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 6th instant in which you were good enough to inform me that an Order in Council has been passed by the Government of Canada which grants the Intermediate Tariff, subject to the usual direct shipment provision, to Austrian goods from the 10th July to the 31st December, 1933.

I have brought this decision to the notice of my Government, who will, on their part, be glad to continue to extend as hitherto the benefits of most-favoured-nation treatment to imports from Canada.

May I take this opportunity of thanking you for your kindness in dealing personally with this matter despite the many calls on your time, and of expressing the hope that both countries will benefit equally under the new tariff regime.

Believe me, Dear Mr. Prime Minister, Yours very sincerely,

G. Franckenstein
