Merchant Shipping Act (No. 52 of 1971) - Sect 234

Penalty for taking wreck at the time of casualty

234.
(1) Where a ship is wrecked, stranded or in distress at any place on or near the coasts of Ceylon, or any tidal water within Ceylon, any cargo or other articles belonging to or separated from the ship which are washed on shore or otherwise lost or taken from the ship shall be delivered to a receiver of wrecks.
(2) Any person (whether or not the owner of any cargo or article) referred to in the preceding subsection, who- shall be guilty of an offence and on conviction thereof shall be liable to a fine not exceeding two thousand rupees.
(a) conceals or keeps possession of any such cargo or article; or
(b) refuses to deliver any such cargo or article to a receiver of wrecks or any person authorized by the receiver to demand such cargo or article,
(3) A receiver of wrecks, or any person authorized by the receiver to demand the delivery to him of any cargo or article referred to in sub-section (1), may take such cargo or article by force from any person refusing to deliver it to him.
