(1) Where for the purposes of this Act any document is to be served on any person, that document may be served-
| | (a) in any case, by delivering a copy thereof personally to the person to be served, or by leaving such copy at his last known place of abode or by transmitting or sending such copy by post; | | |
| | (b) if the document is to be served on the master of a ship (where there is a master), or on a person belonging to a ship, by leaving such document for him on board that ship with the person being or appearing to be in command or charge of the ship; and | | |
| | (c) if the document is to be served on the master of a ship, and there is no master and the ship is in Ceylon, on the managing owner of the ship or, if there is no managing owner in Ceylon, on some agent of the owner residing in Ceylon or, where no such agent is known or can be found, by affixing a copy thereof in some conspicuous place in the ship. | | |

(2) Any person who obstructs the service on the master of a ship of any document under this Act relating to the detention of the ship as unseaworthy shall be guilty of an offence and on conviction thereof shall be liable to a fine not exceeding two hundred rupees. |

(3) Any owner or master of a ship who is party or privy to any obstruction referred to in sub-section (2) shall be guilty of an offence and on conviction thereof shall be liable to a fine not exceeding five thousand rupees, or to imprisonment of either description for a term not exceeding two years, or to both such fine and imprisonment. |
