Education Act (Cap. 327) Bye-Laws Of 2005 In Terms Of The General Regulations For University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 For The Diploma In Agriculture - Dip. Agric. - Under The Auspices Of The Institute Of Agriculture (L.N. 14 Of 2005 )

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections
30(5) and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Institute of Agriculture in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Diploma in Agriculture - Dip. Agric. - under the auspices of the Institute of Agriculture.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Institute of Agriculture;
“the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed for the
Course;
“the Course” means the course programme leading to the Diploma in
Agriculture – Dip. Agric.;
“the Diploma” means the Diploma in Agriculture – Dip. Agric.; “the Institute” means the Institute of Agriculture; and

“the Principal Regulations” means the General Regulations for
University Undergraduate Awards, 2004.

2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in
October 2003 or later.

3. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall have successfully completed a preparatory one-year course specifically related to the proposed course of studies, immediately prior to the commencement of the Course, or satisfy the entry requirements for registration in terms of the Admission Regulations and be in possession of passes at Advanced Matriculation Level in Chemistry and Biology.
4. To be admitted as provisional students in the one-year preparatory course specifically related to the proposed course of studies, applicants shall be in possession of:

either

(a) six passes at grade 5 or better at Secondary Education Certificate
Level, including Maltese, English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject;

or

(b) a diploma obtained from the College of Agriculture of the Department of Education with a grade of merit or better, or a similar qualification which, in the opinion of the Board, is equivalent to this qualification.

5. The preparatory course extends over a period of one year full- time studies and shall consist of:

(a) study-units to which 42 credits are assigned in the following areas of study: Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Crop Science and Animal Science; and
(b) an Agricultural Practice to which 18 credits are assigned gained during the period October to April. The Agricultural Practice shall be carried out at an approved establishment on two days a week under the supervision of a field teacher approved by the Board.

6. The Course shall extend over a period of one academic year of full-time study.
7. The Course programme shall consist of:
(a) study-units to which 48 credits are assigned in the following five areas of study: Animal Production, Crop Production, Soil Science, Agricultural Economics and Business, and Agricultural Engineering; and
(b) an Agricultural Practice in a chosen subject area leading to a project report of 5000 words on an approved topic to which 12 credits are assigned. The Agricultural Practice shall be carried out at an approved establishment on two days a week under the supervision of a field teacher approved by the Board.

8. The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
