EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of theGeneral Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Diploma in Journalism – Dip. Journalism -under the auspices of the Centre for Communication Technology

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Centre for Communication Technology in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Diploma in Journalism Dip. Journalism - under the auspices of the Centre for Communication Technology.

(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -

“the Board” means the Board of the Centre for Communication

Technology;

Course;

“the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed for the

“the Centre” means the Centre for Communication Technology;

“the Course” means the programme of studies leading to the Diploma; “the Diploma” means the Diploma in Journalism - Dip. Journalism.

Applicability

2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in

October 2003 or later.

Requirements for Admission

3. (1) Applicants may be registered for the Course according to the provisions of these bye-laws if they are eligible for admission to the University as regular students in terms of the Admission Regulations of the University.

(2) Applicants applying for admission in terms of sub-paragraph (a)(iii) of paragraph (2) of regulation 2 of the Admission Regulations are required to have a minimum of one year journalistic experience and be currently working with a publishing establishment.

Course Duration

4. The Course shall extend over one academic year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.

Course Programme

5. (1) The Course shall consist of the following components, to which not less than sixty credits shall be assigned:

study-units in Journalism Studies study-units in Media Studies complementary study-units

Long Essay, Placement, and synoptic study-units.

(2) In order to be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students shall obtain at least sixty credits, including all the credits for the compulsory study- units.

Long Essay

6. (1) Students shall be required to submit a Long Essay of not less than five thousand and not more than seven thousand words, by not later than the final day of classes of the last semester of the Course.

(2) Students who fail the Long Essay shall be allowed to re-submit it once within a period of six months.

Placement

7. (1) The Placement shall be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.

(2) Students who fail the Placement shall be allowed to repeat it once within a period of six months.

Classification of the Award

8. (1) The final result of students shall take into account their performance in all the components of the Course. The final result shall be based on the following weighting:

Taught Study-Units, Placement and Long Essay 60% Synoptic Study-Units 40%.

(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:

Pass with Distinction

Pass.
