Education Act (Cap. 327) Bye-Laws Of 2006 In Terms Of The General Regulations For University Undergradaute Awards, 2004 For The Degree Of Bachelor Of Arts (Honours) In Criminology - B.A. (Hons) Criminology - Under The Auspices Of The Institute Of Forensic Studies (L.N. 97 Of 2006 )

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and 31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the Institute of Forensic Studies in virtue of the powers conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:

1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2006 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology – B.A. (Hons) Criminology – under the auspices of the Institute of Forensic Studies.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Institute of Forensic Studies;
“the Course” means the programme of studies leading to the degree of
Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology - B.A. (Hons) Criminology;
“the Degree” means degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Criminology - B.A. (Hons) Criminology; and
“the Diploma” means the Diploma in Criminology.

2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in October
2003 or later.

3. (1) To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations of the University.
(2) Students may be registered for the course of studies leading to the
Degree if they obtain the Diploma and renounce to the award of the Diploma.

4. The Course shall extend over a period of three years of full-time study or five years of part-time study.

5. (1) The Course shall consist of three levels assigned 60 credits each.
(2) 90 credits (60 credits at Level 1 and 30 credits at Level 2) shall be assigned for the first three years of part-time study. When the course is offered on a full-time basis, 60 credits (at Level 1) shall be assigned for the first year.
(3) 90 credits (30 credits at Level 2 and 60 credits at Level 3) shall be assigned for the following two years of part-time study. When the Course is offered on a full-time basis, 60 credits (at Level 2) shall be assigned for the second year and
60 credits (at Level 3) shall be assigned for the third year.

6. Students who successfully complete the programme of study for the first two years of part-time study (or for the first year of full-time study) and who either opt not to proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the following three years of part-time study (or two years of full-time study) shall be entitled to the award of the Diploma in Criminology.

7. (1) The Final Weighted Average Mark for the classification of the Diploma and the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in each year of the Course, which shall be weighted according to the number of credits assigned to the study-units.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:

Passed with Distinction
Passed.
(3) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Degree shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
First Class Honours
Upper Second Class Honours Lower Second Class Honours Third Class Honours.

8. The Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the General Regulations for Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Diploma in Criminology, published as Legal Notice 160 of 2005, shall be deemed to cease to be in force as from 30 September
2005.
