EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)Diploma in Baroque Architecture Course Regulations, 2003

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Diploma in Baroque
Architecture Course Regulations, 2003.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
“the Board” means the Board of the International Institute for Baroque
Studies;
“the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed for the
Course;
“the Course” means the course of studies leading to the Diploma in
Baroque Architecture; and
“the Diploma” means the Diploma in Baroque Architecture.

Applicability

2. These regulations shall be applicable to courses starting in October
2002 or later.

Eligibility for the Diploma

3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students must:
(a) be registered as regular students in the Course in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University;
(b) successfully complete the course of studies, obtain all the credits indicated in paragraph (3) of regulation 6, and satisfy any other requirements prescribed in these regulations; and
(c) satisfy all other requirements prescribed in any other relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the University.

Registration for the Course

4. (1) Applicants may be registered for the Course according to the provisions of these regulations if they are eligible for admission to the University as regular students in terms of the Admission Regulations of the University.
(2) Applicants shall apply to register for the Course on the prescribed form and within the time specified by the Office of the Registrar.
(3) Admission to the Course shall be limited to applicants who satisfy the requirements of paragraph (1) of this regulation and who are nominated by organisations that commission the Course for their employees after an agreement with the Board.

Course Duration

5. The Course shall be of one year’s duration on a full-time basis or its equivalent in part-time study.

Course of Studies

6. (1) The course of studies shall consist of:
(a) study-units to which 19 credits are assigned;
(b) field experience to which 6 credits are assigned; and
(c) a Long Essay/Project to which 5 credits are assigned.
(2) The Board of Studies shall draw up a catalogue of study-units. The catalogue shall indicate the code, title, description and type of each study-unit, the credits assigned to each study-unit, which study-units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites for other study-units, the methods of teaching and assessment, and the name of the lecturer giving the study-unit. The Board shall publish the catalogue for the Course prior to its commencement, following the approval of Senate. Study-units may include lectures, seminars,
laboratory/practical sessions, site visits or combinations of these, as indicated in the catalogue.
(3) In order to be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students shall obtain at least thirty credits, including all the credits for the compulsory study- units, the field experience and the Long Essay/Project.

Assessment and Examinations

7. (1) Study-units shall be assessed at the end of the semester in which they were held.
(2) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades in descending order of merit: A, B, C, and D. A failure shall be indicated by ‘F’. Incomplete work due to justifiable reasons (illness, approved absence, etc.) shall be indicated by ‘I’. In all other cases, the results of uncompleted study- units shall be indicated as ‘F’. The grades awarded shall take into account the students’ performance in one or more of the following elements, as deemed appropriate by the Board: assignments (to which a percentage of the final grade for the study-unit may be assigned) and written and/or oral examinations.
(3) Students who fail in any study-unit shall be allowed a supplementary assessment. Such a supplementary assessment shall normally have the same mode of assessment as the corresponding first assessment. A supplementary assessment shall be held at a scheduled examination session (normally in September). In the case of assignments, the supplementary assessment shall be made by arrangement with the lecturer concerned. In the supplementary assessment, the maximum grade that may be awarded shall be grade ‘D’.
(4) Students who fail their re-assessment shall be required to withdraw from the Course.

Field Experience

8. (1) During the second semester, students shall be required to undergo a field experience under adequate supervision as determined by the Board of Studies. During this period, students are encouraged to apply theory to practice.
(2) The field experience shall be assessed on the basis of: (a) attendance;
(b) facility in applying theory to practice; and
(c) quality of work produced.

Long Essay/Project

9. (1) Students shall be required to submit a Long Essay of not less than
10,000 and not more than 15,000 words, or a Project deemed to be of equivalent academic standard by the Board of Studies, by the date established by the Board of Studies.
(2) The proposal for the Long Essay/Project shall be submitted for approval of the Board of Studies by not later than one week after commencement of the second semester of studies.
(3) The Long Essay/Project shall be assessed by the supervisor and two additional examiners appointed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board of Studies.
(4) Students who fail the Long Essay/Project shall be allowed to re- submit it once within a period of six months. If successful, the maximum grade that may be awarded shall be grade ‘D’.

Attendance

10. Regular attendance for all components of the Course is obligatory. In the case of absence for a reason the Board of Studies considers valid, it may allow students to proceed with the Course, provided that alternative arrangements are made to make up for the missed components.

Final Result

11. (1) The final result shall take into account the students’ performance in the study-units, the field experience and the Long Essay/Project, which shall be weighted according to the number of credits assigned to them.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
