EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Teaching Learners with Dyslexia) – P.G. Cert. Ed. (Dyslexia) Course Regulations, 2007

In exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 74 (5) and 75 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 75 and 79 of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Postgraduate Certificate in Education
(Teaching Learners with Dyslexia) – P.G. Cert. Ed. (Dyslexia) – Course Regulations,
2007.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
“the Certificate” means the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Teaching of
Learners with Dyslexia) – P.G. Cert. Ed. (Dyslexia); and
“the Course” means the course of studies leading to the Certificate.

Applicability

2. These regulations shall be applicable to the Course starting in February 2007.

Special Course Requirements and Selection of Applicants

3. (1) Applicants may be registered for the Course according to the provisions of these regulations, if they:
(a) are in possession of a Bachelor of Education (Honours) degree or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or any other equivalent teaching qualification recognised by the Board; and

(b) are serving teachers, preferably with not less than three years’ experience; and
(c) through an interview, satisfy the Board that they have the necessary qualifications to follow the Course, including:
(i) professional aptitude and disposition, and awareness of dyslexia;
and
(ii) experience of working with children and young persons with dyslexia; and
(d) are nominated by the Education Division.
(2) The Board shall recommend to Senate the number of applicants that may be allowed to register for the Course and whether these may be drawn from the primary and/or secondary sectors, depending on the availability of resources. The number of available places shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.
(3) If there are more eligible applicants than the number of places available, applicants shall be selected on their performance in the interview and their aptitude, experience and commitment.

Course Duration

4. The Course shall extend over two semesters of part-time study.

Course of Studies

5. (1) The course of studies shall consist of the following components:
(a) taught study-units, to which a total of 24 ECTS credits shall be assigned, in the following areas of study:
Theoretical background to dyslexia
Principles of assessment for teachers (to include BPS Certificate of
Competence in Testing Level A)
Principles and Methodologies in Teaching Dyslexic Learners
General Study-Unit on issues related to individual educational needs. (b) two Teaching Practice Placements, assigned 6 ECTS credits.
(2) The Board shall draw up a catalogue of study-units. The catalogue shall indicate the code, title, description and type of each study-unit, the credits assigned to each study-unit, which study-units are compulsory, and the methods of teaching and

assessment. The Board shall publish the catalogue for the Course prior to its commencement, following the approval of Senate.

Assessment and Progress

6. (1) Students shall be considered to have satisfied the assessment criteria of the
Course if they obtain:
(a) the 24 ECTS credits assigned to the taught study-units; and
(b) the 6 ECTS credits assigned to the Teaching Practice Placements.
(2) Results for the assessment of the taught study-units and the Teaching Practice Placements shall be published as a percentage mark and grade as indicated in the table below:

Both the percentage mark and the grade shall be recorded in the students’ academic record.
(3) Students who fail in the assessment of a taught study-unit shall be allowed a re-assessment once only. If successful, the maximum mark and grade that may be awarded shall be 45% - grade D.
(4) If after re-assessment, students do not obtain the required credits, they shall be required to withdraw from the Course.

Teaching Practice Placements

7. (1) There shall be two Teaching Practice Placements during the Course to each of which 3 ECTS credits shall be assigned. Each placement shall involve a minimum teaching time of at least 30 hours.
(2) The placing of students in schools during the Teaching Practice Placement component of the Course shall be the responsibility of the Education Division.

(3) Students who fail any Teaching Practice Placement shall be allowed to repeat it once only. The repeat Teaching Practice Placement shall be carried out during the following semester. If successful, the maximum marks and grade that may be awarded shall be 45% - grade D.
(4) Students shall be allowed to repeat only one failed Teaching Practice Placement. Students who fail the second Teaching Practice Placement after having passed the first one following re-assessment, shall not be allowed to repeat it and shall be required to withdraw from the Course.

Award of the Certificate

8. (1) To qualify for the award of the Certificate, students must obtain all the 30
ECTS credits indicated in paragraph (1) of regulation 6.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Certificate shall be published in a list in alphabetical order.
