Education Act (Cap. 327) Postgraduate Diploma And Degree Of Master In Translation, And Postgraduate Diploma And Degree Of Master In Interpreting, And Postgraduate Diploma And Degree Of Master In Translation And Interpreting Course Regulations, 2006 (L.N. 96 Of 2006 )

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and
31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act:

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Postgraduate Diploma and Degree of Master in Translation, and Postgraduate Diploma and Degree of Master in Interpreting, and Postgraduate Diploma and Degree of Master in Translation and Interpreting Course Regulations, 2006.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Arts;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed by Senate for the Course, on the recommendation of the Board;
"the Course" means the course of studies leading to the Postgraduate Diploma and degree of Master in Translation, and Postgraduate Diploma and degree of Master in Interpreting, and Postgraduate Diploma and degree of Master in Translation and Interpreting;
"the Degree" means the degree of Master in Translation, and the degree of
Master in Interpreting, and the degree of Master in Translation and Interpreting; and
"the Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation, and the Postgraduate Diploma in Interpreting, and the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Interpreting.

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in October 2003 or later.

3. (1) Applicants for admission to the Course shall satisfy the following requirements:
(a) hold a recognised university degree (in any subject) or a qualification deemed by Senate to be equivalent to a degree; and
(b) pass in proficiency and other tests and in an interview which shall be held for the purpose.
(2) The proficiency test is intended to assess the applicants’ command of their mother language (Maltese and/or English) and their in-depth knowledge of two other languages. The other tests shall assess the applicants’ communication skills, as well as their powers of concentration, analysis and synthesis, ability to work under pressure, and interest in international affairs.

4. (1) The course leading to the Diploma shall extend over one year of full- time study or two years of part-time study. The course leading to the Diploma in Interpreting may also be offered over one year of full-time study (after hours).
(2) The course leading to the Degree shall extend over a further period of not more than six months of full-time study or one year of part-time study. The Board may, before the presentation of the dissertation, extend such period by one further period not exceeding twelve months.
(3) Students may, by permission of the Board of Studies, register on a part-time basis. Any period spent in part-time study or research shall be considered equivalent to half the same period of full-time study or research.
(4) Students, whether full-time or part-time, shall be required to register at the beginning of each academic year.

5. (1) The Board of Studies shall announce which area/s of study shall be offered in any particular year, following approval of Senate.
(2) The programme of studies for the area/s of study offered shall be published prior to the commencement of the Course and shall include study-units for which 60 ECTS credits shall be assigned. It shall indicate which study-units are offered during each year of the part-time Course, and which study-units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites for other study-units.

(3) The Course may be offered in the following areas of study: Translation and/or Interpreting to and/or from any languages as approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.
(4) The list of languages offered in the programme of studies shall be published prior to the commencement of each Course.
(5) The Board of Studies shall draw up a catalogue of study-units for each area of study. The catalogue shall indicate the level, code, title, description and type of each study-unit, the credits assigned to each study-unit, and the methods of teaching and assessment. The Board shall publish the catalogue prior to the commencement of each Course, following the approval of Senate.

6. Results for the assessment of the study-units and the dissertation shall be published as a percentage mark and grade as indicated in the table below:

Both the percentage mark and the grade shall be recorded in the students’ academic record. However, only the percentage mark shall be used for the purpose of calculating the final classification of the awards.
7. Students who fail in any taught study-unit shall be allowed a supplementary assessment once only. If unsuccessful, students shall be required to withdraw from the Course. In supplementary assessments, the maximum marks and grade that may be awarded shall be 45% - grade D.
8. Oral/practical examinations may be recorded.

9. Students shall satisfy the requirements for the award of the Diploma if they obtain 60 credits. The final result of each student shall take into account all the results obtained in the assessments of the taught and practical components of the Course, which shall be weighted according to the number of credits assigned to each.
10. The names of students who qualify for the award of the Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:

11. Students who successfully complete the programme of studies for the
Diploma may apply to proceed to the course leading to the degree of Master.
12. (1) The programme of studies for the Degree shall consist of research and the writing of a dissertation on an approved subject, normally of not more than
30,000 words, to which 30 ECTS credits shall be assigned. The dissertation must be either a record of original work or an ordered and critical expression of existing data with regard to a particular subject. The dissertation must satisfy the Board of Examiners as regards language and literary presentation.
(2) Students must present their research proposal for the dissertation for approval by the Board of Studies by not later than two months prior to the end of the Diploma course or as directed by the Board of Studies.
(3) No dissertation shall be accepted which is identical in substance to a document already submitted for a degree in this or any other university or to any other published material. Students shall, however, not be precluded from incorporating such previous work as may be necessary to the presentation and a fuller understanding of their exposition, provided that the nature and extent of such incorporation are clearly indicated in the dissertation itself.

13. The Board shall appoint a supervisor for each student. The supervisors shall require students to report to them at least once every three months, or more often as they deem necessary. Supervisors may refer to the Board of Studies students whose work they consider unsatisfactory and shall refer any substantial modification in the title or content of the dissertation for the approval of the Board. No dissertation may be submitted to the examiners without a certificate, signed by the supervisor, of its conformity with these regulations.

14. (1) Each dissertation shall be examined by a Board of Examiners appointed in terms of the University Examinations Regulations. One of the examiners shall normally be an external examiner from another university.
(2) Students shall normally be required to take a viva voce examination to defend their dissertation.

15. Students whose dissertation is found unsatisfactory may be allowed by the Board, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to re-submit it in a revised form within a period of not less than six and not more than twelve months from the day on which it is referred back to them.

16. (1) The final result for the award of the Degree shall take into account the merits of the dissertation and its oral defence.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Degree shall be published in a list in alphabetical order and classified as follows:

Passed.
