EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)Postgraduate Diploma in Lifelong Career Guidance and DevelopmentCourse Regulations, 2006

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and

31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Postgraduate Diploma in Lifelong

Career Guidance and Development Course Regulations, 2006.

(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires:

“the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed by Senate for the Course, on the recommendations of the Boards of the Faculty of Education and of the Centre for Labour Studies;

“the Course” means the course of studies leading to the Postgraduate Diploma in Lifelong Career Guidance and Development; and

“the Diploma” means the Postgraduate Diploma in Lifelong Career Guidance and Development.

Applicability

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in February 2006 or later.

Qualifications for Admission

3. (1) Applicants may be registered for the Course according to the provisions of these regulations if they:

(a) are in possession of a recognised first degree, preferably in a related area; and

(b) satisfy the Board of Studies through an interview that they have the necessary qualifications to follow the Course, including:

(i) professional aptitude and disposition; and

(ii) preferably, work experience in a related field.

(2) The Board of Studies shall recommend to Senate the number of applicants that may be allowed to register for the Course. The number of available places shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.

(3) If there are more eligible applicants than the number of places available, applicants shall be selected on their performance in the interview and their educational qualifications.

Board of Studies

4. (1) The academic administration of the Course shall be entrusted to a Board of

Studies appointed for the purpose.

(2) The Board of Studies shall be composed of:

(a) a Chairperson appointed by the Board of the Faculty of Education;

(b) an academic representative from each of the Faculty of Education and the

Centre for Labour Studies; and

(c) the course coordinator appointed by Senate after consultation with the Boards of the Faculty of Education and the Centre for Labour Studies.

(3) The Board of Studies shall regularly consult the social partners in order to ensure that the training offered is sensitive and responsive to community needs.

Course Duration

5. The Course shall extend over a period of two years of part-time study.

Programme of Studies

6. (1) The Course shall consist of study-units to which 60 ECTS credits shall be assigned, including a long essay/project to which 8 ECTS credits shall be assigned.

(2) The Board of Studies shall draw up the programme of studies for the

Course which shall indicate the study-units to be followed in each semester and which

study-units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites for other study-units. The Board of Studies shall publish the programme of studies for the Course prior to its commencement, following the approval of Senate.

(3) The level, code, title, description and type of each study unit, the number of credits assigned to each study-unit, the methods of teaching and assessment, and the lecturer giving the study-unit shall be published in a catalogue of study-units, which shall be published by the Board of Studies, following approval by Senate.

7. (1) Study-units shall be assessed at the end of the semester in which they were

Both the percentage mark and the grade shall be recorded in the students’ academic record. However, only the percentage mark shall be used for the purpose of calculating the final classification of the Diploma.

(2) Students who fail in any study-unit shall be allowed a supplementary assessment once only. Such a supplementary assessment shall normally have the same mode of assessment as the corresponding first assessment. In the supplementary assessment, the maximum marks and grade that may be awarded shall be 45% - grade D.

(3) If unsuccessful in the supplementary assessment, students may not continue the Course.

Long Essay/Project

8. (1) Students shall be required to submit a long essay or project on a theme related to the subjects covered during the Course and approved by the Board of Studies. Long essays shall be between 10,000 and 12,000 words long.

(2) Students who fail in the long essay/project shall be allowed to resubmit it once more within a period of six months.

Award of Diploma

9. Students shall be considered to have successfully completed the Course if they: (a) obtain a total of not less than 52 ECTS credits for the study-units, including

passes in all the compulsory study-units; and

(b) be approved in the long essay/project study-unit.

10. (1) The final classification of each student shall take into account all the marks obtained in the assessments of the study-units and the long essay/project.

(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:

Passed.
