EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)Postgraduate Diploma – P.G. Dip. – and Degree of Master of Science – M.Sc. –in Integrated Product Development Course Regulations, 2006 under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and
31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Postgraduate Diploma – P.G. Dip. – and Degree of Master of Science – M.Sc. – in Integrated Product Development Course Regulations, 2006.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires - "the Board" means the Faculty Board of Engineering;
"the Course" means the course of studies leading to the Postgraduate Diploma – P.G. Dip. – and the Degree of Master of Science – M.Sc. – in Integrated Product Development;
"the Degree" means the degree of Master of Science – M.Sc. – in Integrated
Product Development; and
"the Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma – P.G. Dip. – in Integrated
Product Development.

2. These regulations shall apply to courses commencing in October 2005 or

Qualifications for Admission

3. Applicants for admission to the Course shall be persons in possession of: (a) the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree with at least Second Class
Honours; or

B 1987

(b) the Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with at least Second Class
Honours in appropriate areas of study as approved by the Board; or
(c) a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to either of the above.

Course Duration

4. The Course shall extend over a period of twelve months of full-time study or three academic years of part-time study.

Course Programme

5. The Course shall consist of:
(a) taught study-units to which 60 credits shall be assigned, in all the following areas of study:
(i) Product Engineering
(ii) Manufacturing Engineering
(iii) Engineering Management; and
(b) a dissertation to which 30 credits shall be assigned.

Assessment and Progress

6. (1) Study-units shall be assessed at the end of the semester in which they were held.
(2) Results for the assessment of study-units and the dissertation shall be published as a percentage mark and grade as indicated in the table below:

Both the percentage mark and the grade shall be recorded in the students’ academic record. However, only the percentage mark shall be used for the purpose of calculating the final classification of the Diploma and the Degree.
7. Students who successfully complete the taught study-units, to which 60 credits are assigned, and opt not to proceed with the course leading to the Degree, or who, having proceeded, do not successfully complete the Course, shall be entitled to the award of the Diploma.

8. (1) Full-time students who, during the first year fail in study-units to which not more than 12 credits are assigned, shall be entitled to reassessment in the September Supplementary Session.
(2) Part-time students who, in any year, fail in study-units to which not more than 8 credits are assigned, shall be entitled to reassessment in the September Supplementary Session.
9. (1) Full-time students who fail in study-units to which more than 12 credits but not more than 20 credits are assigned or who fail any supplementary assessment shall be deemed to have failed the Course but may be allowed to follow an additional period of study to attain the required credits for the award of the Diploma.
(2) Part-time students who, in any year, fail in study-units to which more than 8 credits but not more than 12 credits are assigned or who fail any supplementary assessment shall be deemed to have failed the Course but may be allowed to follow an additional period of study to attain the required credits for the award of the Diploma.
10. In the additional period, students are to repeat all failed compulsory study-units. If the failed study-units are electives, then students may be allowed to follow alternative study-units. Students who, during the additional period, fail in study-units to which not more than 8 credits are assigned shall be entitled to a final reassessment in the September Supplementary Session. Students who, during the additional period, fail in study-units to which more than 8 credits are assigned or who fail the supplementary assessment shall be required to withdraw from the Course.
11. Students may be allowed to repeat their failed study-units whenever and if they are next offered, provided that they are offered within the next 3 years.
12. Full-time students who fail in study-units to which more than 20 credits are assigned, and part-time students who during any year fail in study-units to which more than 12 credits are assigned, shall be required to withdraw from the Course.

Dissertation

13. Students must submit a research proposal for the dissertation by a date stipulated by the Board. Any substantial modification in the title or content must be approved by the Board.
14. Students shall be required to present a dissertation on an approved subject, normally of not more than 20,000 words. The dissertation must be either a

record of original work or an ordered and critical expression of existing data with regard to a particular subject. It must satisfy the Board as regards language and literary presentation.
15. The Board shall appoint a supervisor for every student. The supervisor shall require the student to report to him as he deems necessary. He may refer to the Board a student whose work he considers unsatisfactory. No dissertation may normally be submitted to the examiners without a certificate, signed by the supervisor, of its conformity with these regulations.
16. No dissertation shall be accepted which is identical in substance to a dissertation already submitted for a degree at this or any other university. Students, however, shall not be precluded from incorporating such previous dissertation work as may be necessary to the presentation and fuller understanding of their exposition, provided that the nature and extent of such incorporation are clearly indicated in the dissertation itself.
17. Dissertations must be submitted within the stipulated period determined by the Board and under those conditions it may impose.
18. Dissertations must conform to the relevant guidelines as regards format.
19. Three copies of the dissertation shall be submitted for examination. After successful defence of the dissertation, students shall be required to submit two hard bound copies, one of which shall be deposited in the University Library and the other in the library of the department concerned.

Examination of the Dissertation

20. (1) Each dissertation shall be examined by a Board of Examiners appointed by Senate on the recommendation of the Board. The supervisor shall act as one of the examiners. An external examiner from another university shall normally also be included.
(2) Students shall normally be required to take a viva voce examination to defend their dissertation.

Re-submission of Dissertation

21. Students’ whose dissertation is found unsatisfactory may be allowed by the Board, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to re-submit it in a revised form within a period of not more than six months from the day on which it is referred back to them.

Award of the Diploma

22. (1) The final result of each student shall take into account all the results obtained in the assessment of the study-units which shall be weighted according to the number of credits assigned to each.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.

Award of the Degree

23. (1) The final result of each student shall take into account all the results obtained in the assessment of the study-units and the dissertation which shall be weighted according to the number of credits assigned to each.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Degree shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
