National Institute Of Technical Education Of Sri Lanka Act (No. 59 of 1998) - Sect 3

Functions of the Institute

3. The functions of the Institute shall be-
(a) to continue all programmes, services and projects conducted by the National Institute of Technical Education of the Department of Technical Education and Training ;
(b) to advise the Minister and advise and assist the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission established by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Act, No. 20 of 1990 (hereinafter referred to as the "Commission") on the formulation of policy pertaining to Human Resource Development and Curriculum Development in Technical and Vocational Education, in accordance with the development plan or plans prepared by the Commission ;
(c) to advise the Minister and advise and assist the Commission regarding plans, programmes and activities pertaining to Human Resource Development, curriculum development and research in Sri Lanka in accordance with the development plan or plans prepared by the Commission ;
(d) to monitor on behalf of the Commission and at the request of the Commission, technical and vocational training standards by the Institutes providing programmes and services in technical and vocational education ;
(e) to provide such training programmes and services in technical and vocational education as may be approved by the Minister ;
(f) to implement and maintain a system for teacher "examination and accreditation as determined by the Commission ;
(g) to initiate and promote practices connected with art in the training of teachers in technical and vocational education including the adaptation of appropriate technology for training purposes ;
(h) to provide professional services in the various functional areas of technical and vocational education and training, Human Resource Development, curriculum development, teaching methodology, teaching technology, educational technology, vocational guidance and counseling ;
(i) to provide and promote graduate level and postgraduate level technical and vocational education and training ;
(j) to undertake and promote research and other studies on all aspects of technical and vocational education and training, including its performance, industry needs, evaluation of institutions and programmes, teacher training needs and social, economic and other aspects of technical and vocational education and training ;
(k) to sponsor and hold conferences, seminars and workshops and to publish books, journals and magazines in connection with all aspects of technical and vocational education and training, with the assistance of national and international organizations where necessary ; and
(l) to liaise and co-ordinate with other institutions, both in Sri Lanka and abroad, discharging functions similar to the functions of the Institute.
